Obama promises to push immigration reform in the first year after reelection
16:55 14 April 2012
Washington-President Barack Obama promised to push immigration reform in his country in the first year after his reelection, in an interview with the Univision network.
“I can promise to try to do it in the first year of my second term. I want to try this year, in fact,” Obama said in the interview to be aired on Sunday morning to mark the closing of the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia).
The president stressed that the obstacle to the progress of immigration reform is “very simple”, and is that “a majority of Democrats are ready to approve it, but no Republican is.”
“We have a Republican challenger who says that the laws of Arizona are a model for the country, and these are laws that potentially allow someone to stop and ask for their proof of citizenship based on an assumption” he said.
“What we need is either a change in Congress or a changed view of Republicans,” said the president, who said his “passion” for the subject “has not diminished.”
“This is something I care about a lot. It’s personal for me, and I will do everything we can to try to fix it. But in the end, I will need Congress to help me,” he said.
During his 2008 presidential campaign, Obama also promised that immigration reform would be a priority in his first year in office, although the issue was finally parked to the benefit of the stimulus plan or health care reform, among other issues.
The increase in Republican presence in Congress after the 2010 legislative elections difficult to advance the prospects in that area of Obama, who pushed through the Dream Act, a bill to legalize certain undocumented students.
As for the relationship with Latin America, the president acknowledged that the continent had “high expectations” with his arrival in office, but found that in the last three years has achieved “remarkable” success in areas such as commercial, educational or the cooperation on clean energy.
Obama, who on Friday released its tax return, also said in the interview that he believes Romney should follow suit.
“I think it is important for any candidate for public office be as transparent as possible,” said the president, who until now had never claimed that obligation, which is shaping up as his rival in his race for president.
