There are a lot of news items on Chapo’s arrest in Mexico.
It’s too soon to fully analyze the effect this may have, but I’ll be watching it and plan to have
another report out on Friday.

Milenio Mexico City 2/23/14

The following is a portion of an opinion article by Roman Revueltas. It’s titled “Obama’s evident lack of interest” and deals with the recent meeting of the heads of state of Canada, U.S. and Mexico. The main issue of the article is about NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) but the first paragraph concerns immigration.
———————————-
Obama’s Evident Lack of Interest

The U.S. press emphasizes that he spent more hours playing golf the previous weekend in California than what he dedicated to his State visit in Toluca. The one who took enough time and showed due attention was Stephen Harper, the Canadian prime minister.

It seems that we Mexicans love Obama. That is, he seems like a nice fellow. However, Mexico would be, let’s say, in the next-to-last place in his list of priorities. The U.S. press emphasizes that he spent more hours playing golf the previous weekend in California than what he dedicated to his State visit in Toluca. However, when a collaborator shows up to bring to the table the issue of illegal immigration, then for sure, his reply is immediate, blunt and persuasive; of the 368 thousand persons who were deported in 2013 by his Administration 241 thousand were Mexicans. He is not to blame, of course, that his country is such an attraction for those millions of our fellow citizens who not only dream to set down stakes in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma or California but declare it so openly; according to various public opinion polls four out of ten citizens of the United States (of Mexico) would prefer to live in the United States (of America.) Neither can he be reproached for taking on such concrete responsibilities as the inviolability of his borders, no matter that our neighbor country’s economy is thirsty for cheap manual labor (one of our classics already said it: “The Mexicans are willing to take on work that not even the blacks want to do.”)

The link below is to an article that describes the apprehension of twenty Ecuadoreans being transported by five Hondurans northbound in two vehicles toward the Honduran border with Guatemala. Its location makes Honduras a bridge for emigrants and drugs.

Proceso Tegucigalpa, Honduras 2/22/14

The headline states that individual monetary remittances to Honduras grew 9% in 2013. Full translation follows:

Individual monetary remittances sent by Honduran immigrants who live abroad, mainly in the U.S., grew by 9% in relation to 2012 and totaled 3.225 billion dollars, according to an official source.
A report from the Central Bank of Honduras specified that last year the amount of remittances was 267 million dollars (9%) larger in comparison with the 2.958 billion received in 2012.

In December alone the remittances were 257,7 million dollars, 7.3% more than the same month in 2012, when they reached 240,2 million.

According to the document, remittances are the main source of foreign currency for Honduras, above that of coffee exports, assembly factories and shrimp, and represent 16.4 % of the country’s gross domestic product.

79.3% of the remittances that reached the country last year originated in the United States, where a bit more than a million Hondurans reside according to official estimates. Aside from the United States, the remittances came from Spain (6.1%), Central America (5.5%), Mexico (2.2%) among other countries.

According to official figures, U.S. and Mexican immigration officials deported 72,679 undocumented Honduran immigrants in 2013. A total of 38,080 Hondurans were expelled from the United States last year, while those from Mexico totaled 34,599 according to date from the Migration Bureau.

(In July of 2013 Honduras, about the size of Tennessee, had a population estimated at 8 1/2. It also has the world’s highest murder rate. (Per CIA World Fact Book) )
