Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens:
Venezuela Announces Planned Events in Wake of Chavez Death

3/6/2013

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas informs all U.S. citizens living, working and traveling in Caracas, Venezuela of the following planned events surrounding the death of President Hugo Chavez. This message supplements information provided in our Security Message of March 5, 2013.

On March 5, with the announcement of President Chávez’s death, the government declared seven days of national mourning beginning on March 6.

All school classes and activities have been suspended beginning on March 6, 2013. Classes will resume on Monday, March 11, 2013.

President Chavez’s remains will be transported from the Military Hospital to the Military Academy in Fuerte Tiuna on March 6, 2013. The procession route will pass through the Avenue San Martín, the Plaza O’Leary in El Silencio, and will proceed on the Avenue Fuerzas Armadas, the Roca Tarpeya, and the Paseo Colón to the Avenue Los Ilustres, where it will arrive at the monoliths of Los Proceres.

Public viewing of President Chavez’s remains will be held from March 6 to March 8 in the Hall de la Academia Militar in Fuerte Tiuna.

The official state funeral ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8 at the Hall de la Academia Militar in Fuerte Tiuna.

The U.S. Embassy recommends avoiding these areas due to anticipated heavy traffic. Traffic in western portions of the city is expected to be significantly heavier than normal. Travel to and from Maiquetia Airport could also be affected.

U.S. citizens traveling to or already in Venezuela are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. It is advisable that you avoid demonstrations if at all possible. Be alert and aware of your surroundings and pay attention to reports in local news media.

U.S. citizens living in Venezuela are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Venezuela. If you are receiving this message, then you are registered with the Embassy. Please pass this information on to any U.S. citizens who may not be registered.
