Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Guatemala,

Violent Acts In and Around Mataquescuintla


The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens traveling and residing in Guatemala that violent acts in and around Mataquescuintla, Jalapa State are becoming more common. In addition, there have been large protests in the City of Jalapa, Jalapa that have the potential for turning violent. Road access has become limited due to intermittent demonstrations. The U.S. Embassy recommends that all U.S. citizens residing or traveling near Mataquescuintla and the City of Jalapa avoid the areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.

We strongly recommend U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Guatemala enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Armed men, on board a van, shot Federal Police inspector, Francisco Humberto Cabrera Jiménez. “They reported an assault that killed a member of the Federal Police at km 54 +600 of Victoria-Monterrey highway, near Oyama ejido” According to the agencies the lifeless body of the inspector was on the asphalt of the road. He was patrolling the highway alone.


On Thursday, 3/21, violence again picked up with the execution of four people, bringing the total to 120 since January. Officials say the rising violent deaths are due to conflict between the Sinaloa and Tijuana cartels.
