Honduras registered a homicide rate of 82.1 per hundred thousand people, the highest in the world, according to a study released Thursday by the United NationsTO .

The third place is the Ivory Coast, with 56.9, followed by Jamaica (52.1), Venezuela (49), Belize (41.7) and Guatemala (41.4) per one hundred thousand people.

The study also points to Honduras as the country with the largest absolute number of homicides in Central America and the sixth highest on the continent, surpassed only by Brazil with 43.909, but with a rate of 22.7.

The absolute number of homicides in Mexico are 20.585 and the rate is 18.1. While Colombia has a homicide rate of 33.4 per hundred thousand inhabitants and absolute numbers of 15.459.

The homicide rate in the United States is 5 per hundred thousand inhabitants and a figure of 15.241.

The previous rate of homicides in Honduras was 77 per hundred thousand inhabitants.

The UN study confirms the northern triangle of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) as one of the most dangerous regions in the world and where drugs are trafficked .

With the support of the Executive, the National Congress approved last June a security fee that will allow police, prosecutors and the Army to have 7,500 million lempiras (US$ 3,968,257) in five years to combat crime.

During his visit to Washington this week, the president of Honduras called on his counterpart Barack Obama for support to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
