Mexico  : Flu deaths versus DWI deaths

Although the influenza epidemic continues to be given extensive media coverage in Mexico, “at least” 20 deaths are caused by drunken driving in Mexico for each one due to the flu virus. Roy Rojas Vargas, consultant for both the Pan American Health Org. and the World Health Org., said that Mexico ranks 7^th in the world for deaths caused by vehicle accidents, with a total of 20 thousand a year, some 55 daily.

“Migrations Conference”

The 9^th “Migrations Conference” is being held today (Tues.) in Quito. Delegates from twelve South American countries will seek to unify and harmonize criteria regarding hemisphere migration policies. A parallel event organized by “community civilian institutions” took place at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences,“FLACSO”. Its purpose: to foment a political dialogue that emphasizes human rights above criminality, insistence on opening of the borders, universal citizenship, integration, human rights and “inter culture” as a reference basis to build a new vision regarding migrations.

Fifty Cancun policemen fired

Four military vehicles loaded with soldiers arrived at the police department in Cancun during the change of shift event on Monday and then the soldiers surrounded the facility. The area’s Chief of Public Security then announced that fifty Cancun policemen were being fired because of “loss of trustworthiness due to presumption of their involvement with drug cartels.” The surprise announcement included the dismissal of a number of supervisory rank personnel.

Large haul of “crystal”

One and a quarter metric tons of “crystal” were found buried in barrels at the “Encantada” Ranch, northeast of Ensenada. [about 50 mi. so. of Tijuana] The drug was wrapped in 250 packages and was said to be enough for 32.5 billion [sic] doses. On Sep. 18th, 50 kilos of “crystal”, some weapons and communications gear were also seized at the same locale. At that time an Ensenada police officer was among the nine persons who were arrested there.

A partial resume of the daily violence

In Mazatlan, state of Sinaloa, three persons were assassinated and eight others wounded by gunfire within a period of twenty minutes in various parts of the city. North of Culiacan, at La Presita, three other subjects were found tied up and shot to death. At press time, yet three more persons were reported assassinated and seven others wounded in affrays around Culiacan. And in Ciudad Juarez, the main crime event of the moment was the killing of four persons in a motel when “a group of armed men burst in violently.”
