Ecuadorans presented with keys to the state

The Vice-Governor [read: Lt. Gov.) of Connecticut, Michael Fedele, visited the Ecuadoran Consulate in New Haven on Sep. 9 to make a symbolic presentation of the keys to the state to Ecuador’s Consul General, Raul Erazo Velarde. The ceremony constituted an acknowledgement by the state’s authorities of the cultural, social and economic contributions of the Ecuadoran community. Fedele, who describes himself as an immigrant in the land of opportunity, committed himself to collaborate in the Consulate’s tasks and to mediate between the state agencies and our [Ecuadoran] community. – unquote –

Cocaine haul
One thousand 690 kilos of cocaine were found by Guatemalan agents under the false floor of a Honduran licensed tractor trailer which had entered Guatemala from Honduras. Five men aboard a BMW escorting the truck were also arrested without incident, but their nationality was not mentioned.

Sinaloa: weapons and drugs seized
“SEDENA” [Mexico’s Dep’t. of Defense] reported the following destruction and/or seizures from Sep. 4 to the 19th in five localities in the state of Sinaloa: 135 “long barrel” firearms; 139 clips; 3,681 rounds of ammo; 768 kilos of marihuana; 889 marihuana fields and 7 poppy fields destroyed. Also houses, warehouses, private and commercial vehicles of various types; two clandestine airstrips and “sausage type” dynamite explosives. Twelve persons have been arrested. The localities involved: Culiacan, Navolato, Mocorito, El Fuerte & Choix.
But a subsequent article in the same paper reported the seizure by army personnel of fifteen more firearms including AK47 and AR15 rifles in El Potrerito, Badiraguato, also in the state of Sinaloa. Also seized at the same time: weed weighing 80 kilos and more than a thousand rounds of ammo.

Shootout in Reynosa
The city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, right across the Rio Grande River from McAllen, Texas, was the scene of a half hour shootout Sunday between federal and military personnel versus unknown subjects. Preliminary reports indicated that at least eight persons were wounded. Grenades and assault rifles were used in the affray that paralyzed the downtown area of the city. [A subsequent report in “Excelsior” – a Mexico City paper –stated that there were four dead and at least six severely wounded]

Two alien smuggling cases
Six Hondurans, one of them a female, were detained by Mex. “Preventive Police” in the state of Chiapas. The six were being smuggled to the United States-Mexico border for a reported $4,000 each.
“El Sur” reported the detention Saturday evening of nine illegal aliens from Guatemala at two different highway points in the state of Guerrero.

Repatriation of Mexicans from the United States
In ten months, from September 2008 to July of this year, 666,708 Mexicans were repatriated from the United States to Mexico, while at the same time the Mexican government repatriated 48,816 Central Americans to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The unavoidable data about Juarez
The latest batch of homicides in Ciudad Juarez has brought this month’s total to 210, and to 1,701 so far for the year. The total for the entire year was 1,653 in 2008. Elsewhere in Mexico, among the more publicized murder events were that of five people, including two small children, who were all shot and subsequently burned to death in a vehicle transporting drugs near Alamos, Sonora. In Durango, police found five victims of execution by gunfire; two other homicides took place in Guerrero, including one in Acapulco, and six others in the state of Sinaloa.
